Keeping precision time -- atomic watches

If you ever wished for a watch that sets itself, then the answer to your prayers is here in the form of atomic watches!

Atomic time is based on the oscillation of a cesium atom. Unlike a quartz crystal, cesium atoms can oscillate forever without any type of alteration. Due to this fact, it serves as a great way to keep time. The United States government has recognized this and has setup an atomic clock in Colorado to keep the "official" time of the United States. This clock sends out a radio signal across the country that is picked up by all of the other atomic clocks to base their time upon.

atomic watches work just like atomic clocks, except they are smaller, and fit around your wrist. These amazing watches have a built in radio frequency decoder that decodes the signal sent out from the United States atomic clock in Colorado and sets the time accordingly. All you have to do is set the time zone you are in and voila! Your watch is showing the correct time, all the time. Atomic watches even account for daylight savings and reset to the correct time every night.

2007 Summer Shecy Pearls Jewelry New Releases: Conventional Pearls in Particular Designs
To keep up with this summer's fashion trends, Shecy Pearls, a leading online pearl jewelry supplier in China, just released their new designs of pearl jewelry. " In the new releases, we combine conventional pearls with particular designs, which is also this summer pearl jewelry trend," says Ivy Huang, the marketing director of Shecy Pearls. When talking about pearls, most people would immediately think of big, round, and especially white pearls. So these pearls are considered conventional. In fact, big round pearls are very rare and expensive, and are from South Sea and Tahiti. They are traditionally set in strands. Summer always represents excitement, energy and enthusiasm. Jewelry styles also change to be more exciting and more particular. Pearls remain hot in this summer, especially the valuable conventional pearls. This summer, big round pearls set in particular designs not only becomes a new trend, but also brings out decentness and dignity. "We released eight new jewelry sets. Each set has a theme, such as Nile, Galaxy, Phoenix, Dew, Blackberry, etc. For these new releases, all the pearls we selected are South Sea pearls and Tahitian pearls and are of the highest quality," says Ivy. Theses eight sets are in eight different styles with very modern designs. For example, the Phoenix set is fancy and intricate with a big round intense golden pearl surrounded by two rows of diamonds in a curvy arrangement, brings out an intriguing ring; the Galaxy set is decent and charming with a round white pearl sits in the middle of a white gold plate, together with a thick wheat chain, forms a glorious brilliant necklace; the Blackberry set is simple and alluring, simply featuring shinny smooth black pearls, diamonds and gold, the whole setting appears so sexy and mysterious. "2007 fashion trend is a harmony of tradition and novelty," says Ivy. " Fashion-conscious women like adding new concepts to traditional jewelry. They are also particular with whole jewelry settings." Shecy Pearls' designers are inspired by this trend and currently released eight refreshing styles. They are still working on it and will bring out more surprise to flourish over this summer.

Mounting Styles For Your Gemstones
It is more difficult than assumed to find easy to set gemstone mountings. Most dealers want to sell finished goods and those who supply good to high grade mountings without stones sell only to established jewelry businesses. Such mountings require a trained jeweler to do the actual stone setting and finishing of the jewelry.

There are some companies that what they call "easy set" mountings. Without using the means a professional jeweler does, meaning lots of training and tools, this is not a bad way to get a feel for the work. You will be able to produce simple, though not elegant, jewelry in silver or gold. Some of the settings are not as easy to "set" as might be implied. Be ready to make a few mistakes and practice first with silver on your least appealing gemstones. When comfortable with the methods, go onto better settings and better stones.

What do I think of these sorts of settings and the "snap-tite" settings? Frankly, since I do work totally from scratch and by using purchased settings of high quality, I am not very impressed with the "easy set" and "snap-tite" settings. I suppose many years ago when I first started I would have seen these as a life saver, not knowing at the time how to set stones the professional ways. One sock truly does not fit all and sometimes fit will be a problem if stones have thick girdles(waists)or are cut with very deep pavilions.

The finish of the final product will not be like I would do with final finishing to a perfect surface but that cannot be and should not be expected in this sort of setting. The settings do look pretty good overall when you take the time to practice first and then do the best you can with better stones. No one is going to look so closely at the details of the finish as I would. Most regular non-jeweler folks who do like jewelry will likely oooh and ahhhh at the pretty jewelry you have done.

Prices are higher to the hobbyist and selling structures are slightly different. In either regard, the products are good overall and the catalogs provide some limited "tips" or clues to doing some kinds of jewelry work. There is not an on-line catalog but you can order catalogs from the website.

Now, working through your question, you asked: "I was thinking the solitaire mounting would be easy to find and should be able to get from the jeweler, but the reproductions will take some hunting. Is it cheaper to supply the mount myself? It there more a risk for damage and a poor setting job if i supply the mount myself?"

"The Emerald Cut Stone". A simple solitaire type would be fine for this stone. The problem often encountered with colored stones is the "cut", because often the stones are cut with a fairly deep pavilion (bottom half of the stone). If you simply purchased a setting for a single emerald cut stone of the right mm size, the setting might not fit due to depth of the gemstone.

In your case the depth of the emerald cut is not out of line and will likely fit a standard setting, but it really should be fitted to the mounting by hand to know for sure if modifications are needed. A "basket style" setting would likely be best. This has a rim of metal around the prongs just below where the girdle (waist) of the stone will fit in the setting.

"The Antique Style Mounting for a Square (cushion) Stone". This setting will likely be difficult to locate. Many mountings are available with the openwork, filigree antique look you desire. However, to find on for the size and shape of stone you have presents a problem.

I seriously doubt you will find such a mounting available by your own searching; then, without being a jeweler and knowing how and what modifications can or should be made to a mounting, you really may not know if the ring will actually work for your stone. This one is also best left to a jeweler. A jeweler will have a much wider range of styles and qualities from several suppliers.

The jeweler if competent should be able to set this square cushion well enough in a proper mounting or purchase an antique style ring base and add a proper setting to the base. I do recommend having a jeweler do the work and supply the rings for the two stones you particularly like. The jeweler will have no reason to do a less than normal quality job on a setting you provide, since the reputation of the jeweler goes out on your hands whether the setting came from the jeweler or not.

But, since the setting for the square cushion may be a hard one to come by, if you find a mounting believing it will work then the jeweler has to do extensive reworking to actually "make it work" the overall work may not be what you expect in final looks, even if technically well done. Also, if a setting is purchased from a jeweler, the sizing to your correct finger size is generally "not" at an extra charge to you, it is part of the sale.

Going up two sizes from an 8 to a 10 will not adversely affect most settings, exceptions being rings with mostly recessed or hollow areas inside the ring which do not like to bend and round out easily and cleanly. Likely the jeweler cannot get the ring ready made in 10 anyway and part of the plan is to size to the correct finger size.

Overall, the sizes of the two stones are nice but not extreme. The sizes should not be a problem in finding mountings. Another reason to have the jeweler supply this setting is "turn around time" on the job. Sales take precedent and during busy seasons that is very true! A job with only labor charges and no other sale involved will sometimes be one of the last to get done during very busy times. This is just a part of business.

"Rhodium". Years ago ladies bought white gold and wore it and had it buffed once in a while and never thought about a rhodium plate to make all whiter. Now, that appears the thing to do. With some white gold with a more yellow look the rhodium is a good idea but often a simple buffing will make the ring look just fine, even if not as white as rhodium. As for replating, the stone does not need to be removed.

Porous stones like turquoise and stones affected by acids such as pearls must be removed or otherwise protected from the solution. Topaz and most faceted colored gems will do just fine as set and no stone removal is needed. The solutions do not affect the gemstones.

So - What On Earth Is Marcasite?
What is Marcasite? Marcasite is a natural mineral that is called iron sulfide and is often mined in South America although it is found naturally all around the world and marcasite is related to iron pyrite which is also called Fools Gold due to its likeness to gold but relative low value miners would mistake iron pyrite for gold when staking a claim and only realising their mistake later. The color of marcasite ranges from dark grey to black often with sparks of yellow or gold throughout the stone. As with all natural stones, the color can change slightly. Marcasite was considered to reduce damaging energy and enhance communication. Marcasite Becoming Fashionable Marcasite jewelry became fashionable in the Victorian era its black color was popular at the time especially at the end of the Queens reign when sombre clothing and adornment were the fashion. Cameo pendants and brooches/pins were especially popular and there are many examples of the dark marcasite contrasting with ivory. Marcasite Today Current marcasite jewelry is now fashionable due to its links with the past. A whole niche has been created for what is often called vintage style where traditional materials are used to make new, fashionable pieces and are regularly seen being worn my a selection of celebrities who like the style. Caring For and Cleaning Marcasite Quite often, marcasite is secured in its setting with jewelers cement and because of this, it may require special cleaning. Do Wipe gently with a soft and clean damp cloth. Dry with a clean, soft and absorbent cloth. Use a towel to ensure that the piece is fully dry. Dont Use a steamer, hot water or sonic cleaner Expose to chemicals or cleaning agents Expose to extreme heat Soak in liquids As with all jewelry, a bit of tending and patience gives its own reward with longer lasting pieces.

Selecting Your Wedding Photographer
Wedding photography is one of the most demanding areas of professional photography, we recommend you thoroughly investigate the photographers style, their personality and their packages before you trust your wedding day to anyone. Never, ever get a friend to do them. Ensure you meet your wedding photographer before making your final decision, as you don't want to get to your big day and be worrying about a personality clash between your wedding party and your wedding photographer. Every wedding photographer has a unique style, and you should also closely examine different styles and decide on photography styles you like and ones you don't. The best place to start is the internet. Take a look at their web site and make a short list of no more than 5 to consider. The photos on their web site should be their best work, so if you are not impressed, move on. Are they up front about their prices? Is the site more flash than substance? A web site speak volumes about the business. A good photographer should cost at least $1500 and up to $5000. Outside this range you are probably getting either a beginner or someone who has too much tied up in their studio decor and needs you to help pay for it. Some good questions to ask your photographer are: Are we looking at photos that you personally took How many weddings have you photographed Do we get to keep the hi-resolution images on CD Wedding Planning: The excitement of getting engaged is often replaced by panic and confusion when the time comes to actually plan and co-ordinate the wedding. There is so much to do. Decide up front whether you have time to do it yourself or whether you should seek help from a professional wedding coordinator. Many reception venues will also help you a lot with arranging many other parts of your wedding. The cost of a professional coordinator is not expensive compared to your overall wedding costs and in many ways they can save you money because they know who are the best suppliers around. If you do decide to do it yourself, then make yourself a list of everything you need to do and when to do it. You are welcome to download the free wedding planner from www.poshphotos.com.au . Getting the best wedding shot: Wedding photography is not like other photography. The subject is almost always moving, there are other people buzzing in and around your subject and a very important event is unfolding as you work. Its a mix of portrait, journalistic and action photography, with a generous amount of people management thrown in. How then does Posh Photography get the best wedding shot time after time? I guess experience is a key factor. We can anticipate what is going to happen next. When its a candid photo we usually saw something special about to happen and captured the image at the right time. When its a set up photo, we know where to have people stand for the best light and how to make them feel relaxed. If you are not relaxed, it shows in the photo. When you have a really good photographer directing the day, the photos always look natural and fun. Good equipment is important, but to be honest its better to have an average camera that you know well then the biggest and best that you haven't figured out. Understanding light and how a camera reacts to light is very important. A camera is much less sophisticated than the human eye so what might look great to people, can turn out bad when photographed. Dealing with harsh sun, random shadows, low light and human emotions all require real skill.

Differences Between Freshwater and Saltwater Pearls
Pearls can be purchased in both freshwater and saltwater form, and the differences between the two make them both unique. Freshwater pearls are formed in freshwater mussels found in bodies of fresh water. By contrast, as one might expect, saltwater pearls are formed in saltwater mussels found in bodies of saltwater.

At one time, saltwater pearls were the only real option on the market, as the number of freshwater pearls being cultivated with desired aesthetic properties were few and far between. Today, freshwater pearls are produced with the same proportionality and size as saltwater pearls, and most often in China.

The processing techniques used in the cultivation of freshwater pearls have been perfected to the point that quality pearls can be realized in a period of between three to six years. Freshwater pearls are cultivated through the use of finite irritants, which are normally smaller than the irritants used in saltwater cultivation. This results in a pearl with a thicker nacre and increased luster. At this time, Chinese pearl cultivators are able to produce upwards of twenty pearls in a single oyster. Many saltwater cultivators produce pearls faster by using irritants that are exceptionally large. This results in increased production but a substantially lower number of nacre layers. Some saltwater pearl farms, however, use irritants slightly larger than those used to aid in the making of freshwater pearls for better quality and higher market value.

Saltwater pearls are naturally less diverse in color than their freshwater counterparts. Usually available in a select few hues, many pearl wholesalers now dye the pearls after they are cultivated for increased coloration. Freshwater pearls offer more luminescence than saltwater pearls. The recent discovery that adding various metals to the water in which freshwater pearls are cultivated can produce wider ranges of colors has brought a renewed interest from pearl buyers worldwide.

Properly cultivated pearls of the highest quality in both the freshwater and saltwater varieties will hold their value provided they are well cared for. With the prices of both coming ever closer for the same size and shape of pearl, today’s consumers can simply choose which they find more aesthetically appealing.

Rules For Wearing Or Not Wearing Engagement Rings - By Women
This may be a really lame question but I got to thinking. When you have a wedding ring or engagement ring do you wear it ALL the time? What about in the shower, doing dishes or doing yard work? I don't have a ring yet, but I'm already nervous about losing it or damaging it. I guess thats what insurance is for, but it still wouldnt be fun to have to go through the pain of losing a ring you love.

I never take mine off. I was in the hospital for 4 weeks and had to have some surgery and they had to tape my ring to my finger cause I would not take it off. I wear gloves when I do the dishes but with my luck if I took it off I would lose it.

I just take off my ring when I take a shower or when I am doing something messy like washing dishes because junk gets built up on your ring. But that it!

I wear it all the time except for when I shower. I get it cleaned once a month though. Plus I clean it myself everyday after I shower. My ring gets loose in the winter when the weather is cold, but it never slips past my knuckle. It spins a lot, but doesn't come off. If your scared it might fall off, they have these new plastic, flexible wraps that you can put around the bottom of your ring, kind of like a rubber grip to stop it from coming off. Then at least you don't have to have it sized. Make sure whoever your FH buys your ring from, sizes it right. It should feel a little tight going over your knuckle and should not be easy to come off. You should have to push your ring up to go over your knuckle.

I take it off before bed & put it back on after I take my shower in the morning. I forgot to put it on today because I was rushing out of the house this morning, and that's happened a few times since I got the ring. I also take it off if I'm cooking something that I have to stick my hands into. Also, if I'm not leaving the house (and therefore, putting myself together, etc.,) I may not even wear it.

It's a personal choice. For me, I'm clumsy and if I slept with it I'd probably be all scratched up by now. For that reason, too, I don't really want to wear it all the time. It's an heirloom and I know my Mom chipped the stone a little & I don't want to do that - or knock it out! Also, I don't want to have to have it professionally cleaned very often because, personally, I think it's a frivolous expense.

When I have a wedding band, I will probably just leave it on all the time and may not wear the e-ring on an everyday basis. They won't be soldered together so that I have the flexibility to wear what I want when I want to.

Tips On Taking Good Care Of A Watch
A watch is more than an accessory and if you take good care of it the watch could become a family heirloom. Caring for a watch is not tedious. • Always place your watch in its case at the end of the day. If you leave in it a bag or purse or on a table it could get scratched badly. • Unless you watch is water proof or resistant you must protect the watch from high humidity levels. Watches that have leather bracelets should not be worn for a swim or dipped in soap suds. The leather will get ruined. • If you want a watch to outlast you then set up a service schedule like you do for your car. Get the watch serviced by its own manufacturer as far as possible. This way you will protect the watch’s authenticity. And, you can be assured that duplicate parts will not be used. The authorized center will service the watch and replace any worn out parts, lubricate the watch, and clean its case. • Read the care booklet carefully. And follow the instructions given. • If the watch is a mechanical one try not to be rough when winding the watch. • If the watch has a metal strap, you can clean the strap in water or use soap, water, and an old toothbrush to clean all the grime away .Take care not to let water into the case. And wipe the case gently with a soft cloth. • Leather straps must be protected from perspiration and expert’s advice that watches with leather straps should be worn loose in summer. When wet the strap must be dried with a soft cloth. Never use a hair drier it will crack the leather up. • Protect your watch from high temperatures, contact with leaking batteries or harmful chemicals, magnets, strong sunlight, and shocks. • If you want to adjust the strap length, place the watch on a flannel piece or cloth. Be gentle or the spring will fly out and never be found again. If you have clumsy hands then take the watch to the service center for adjustments. • If the watch needs winding you must wind it at the same time everyday. Research indicates that winding in the morning is beat. Wind a watch slowly and consistently. Stop winding when you meet with resistance. Be careful or you will break the spring if you continue to wind the watch. • If the watch is automatic then you cans wing the arm around in an arc to get the watch running. Some watches have winding too, and then give the watch around 25 gentle turns to get it running smoothly. Automatics can be left off overnight without winding. • If you need to remove any scratches you can do so with a gentle cleaner and soft cloth to rub the scratch away. Many people use products that range from Brasso to toothpaste to Polywatch. A watch will work for 10-15 years without breaking down. But sometimes not servicing the watch regularly can lead to huge expenses when a final break down occurs. The adage “a stitch in time saves nine” applies to the world of watches.

Ideas On Fixing Jade Jewelry
Jade is one of the toughest gems around. Not the hardest, toughest. That means it can take a lot of abuse before anything happens. Warm soapy water is the best to clean it. What you must watch out for is bye in the jade. Many unscrupulous bealers enhance the color with bye. This is especialy true of violet jade. Basically the only thing that could damage jade is other pieces of jade or diamonds. So keep them stored separately in plactic bags and don't allow them to touch each other.

Keep jade out of direct sunlight for long periods of time and keep from drastic tempurature changes. There are many good books on jade and its care. You can go to your local library or look put jade on the internet.

Typically, jade bracelets come cut as a solid bangle or as a flexible bracelet with several sections of jade held by metal end caps and joints between pieces. With your bracelet, adding the spacer is a good idea but you will have to have two spacers, not one.

Since the solid jade is not flexible, the bracelet will need to be cut on opposite sides so each half may be connected with a spacer. You will need to find someone with a fine blade diamond saw to cut the jade. These saws are motorized using a 6" or so circular blade of thin design. Steel tools simply will not do the job. You want a fine and neat cut so the ends are parallel and match nicely.

If a jeweler cannot do this(most will not have fine diamond rock saws) one suggestion is to contact a local rock and gem shop. The rock and gem shops cater to folks who like to do their own stone polishing and a diamond saw is one of the basic tools of the hobby. Ask the rock shop if they can recommend someone has a "thin kerf" rock saw. People who do faceted stones or cut opal are most likely to have the diamond saw with a fine(thin) blade and may cut the bracelet for you. The rock shop may also offer this service for a minimal fee.

Spacers will take the form of "end caps" or shallow cups into which the jade is cemented. The spacers could be made with two opposing caps (shallow tubes) for joining the jade ends, with one spacer on each side of the bracelet. Any competent bench jeweler should be able to fabricate the spacer from silver stock or use available silver "findings" to make the caps. Findings is the word used by jewelers to describe the "parts" used in jewelry work, such as ring shanks, stone settings, clasps, catches, etc.

Depending on the diameter of the jade, there is the possibility of the jeweler using "bezel cups" to make the spacers. Bezel cups are stamped cups of silver (or other metal) used to mount stones onto bracelets, rings and other jewelry. Purchased, the bezel cups should work and will cost a fraction of the price if hand fabricated from silver sheet stock. Some silver design should be between each cap to allow the angle of the caps to match the angle of the jade ends for a clean look and secure fit.

The use of a single section of silver tube for each spacer is possible but that depends on the angle of the jade at the cut ends and availability of silver tube of large enough diameter.

Yes, the job is certainly possible and not very difficult to do. The problem is getting the bracelet sawn in-two cleanly. After that, having the spacers made should not be a daunting task at all. If you wanted, the spacers could be made one with a clasp and the other with a hinge, providing a bangle which opens and closes to be placed on the arm.

Joining the jade to the spacer cups (or tubes) will be a cement designed for such work. I suggest a fine quality epoxy cement which cures to a water clear color. One such cement is Hughes 330, designed for joining gemstone material and metals. Other epoxy cements will work just so long as the cement is applied with care with little excess to show at the caps.

Accessorizing with Pearls
Few other types of jewelry can match the inherent beauty of pearls. Whether freshwater or saltwater, black, white or any color in between, pearls offer something that no precious metals or gemstones can provide. Perhaps that’s why accessorizing with pearls is so popular. Pearls have always been a popular choice among consumers, but interest in pearls has increased steadily over the last two decades.

Unlike other options, pearls have the capacity to be understated, depending on their size and color. Though the range of colors pearls can be found in is ever widening thanks to new cultivating techniques, pearls generally fall into one of three color schemes. White pearls are most common, followed by colored pearls with hues that range from pink to almost orange. Black pearls round out the list and are often the priciest of pearls.

Tahitian black pearls make exceptional accessories, especially for business and evening wear. Elegant and dressy by nature, these pearls can often be found in cufflinks, earrings and pendant necklaces. White pearls are equally well suited for finer attire, but also go well with casual wear. Colored pearls look best when matched to clothing of a similar or analogous color.

Single strand pearl necklaces usually look better when the pearls that make up the necklace are of the same dimensions, though necklaces with large pearls at the center and descending sizes in each direction can be beautiful with the right fashions. For bracelets, triple strands are becoming more popular, though the single strand bracelets are the top choice for elegant eveningwear.

Pearl earrings can be single pearls studs, clusters, halves or hanging. Single pearl earrings are the most popular, especially white Akoya studs. Unlike round earrings made of gold or other precious metals, the dimensionality of pearls works well with all facial types, whether round, long or anywhere in between.

The important thing to remember when purchasing pearls is that, like diamonds, it’s better to get the best pearl you can afford, even if that means sacrificing size. Quality pearls from a reputable jeweler, preferably one specializing in pearls only, will be something you can enjoy for a lifetime.

Facts About Pink Diamonds
The Argyle Diamond Mine is located in a remote corner of North West Australia and it produces over 90 percent of the world supply of pink diamonds and yet less that 1/10 of 1 percent is classified as Pink in color.

The pink diamonds comes in shades ranging from a pastel rose, such as the Pink Orchid to intense purple-reds of the Moussaieff Red, and the price is determined by the intensity of the color. Pink diamonds have sold for up to $1,000,000 a carat. Unlike the Type I diamonds that derived their color from impurities imbedded in the diamond, Pink diamonds are considered a Type II and get their color from a process known as Plastic Deformation.

Type II diamonds have very few if any nitrogen impurities in them. They get their coloration due to structural anomalies caused by Plastic Deformation during the crystal growth. The intense pressure changes the lattice structure of diamonds and has led to the formation of Pink, Red, and Brown colored diamonds.

Only 1 out of the top 66 largest diamonds in the world is pink. When Ben Affleck gave Jennifer Lopez a pink diamond solitaire engagement ring, traffic to web sites that had pink diamonds increased from 300 to 400 percent. Although not normally large in size they have become very popular and over the years many have become world famous.

Pink Panther

Probably the most famous pink diamond in the world was the Pink Panther Diamond that was made famous by the 1964 file release of The Pink Panther. Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau was on the trail of the jewel thief also known as The Pink Panther.

Darya-I-Nur

Darya-I-Nur diamond is believed to be the largest pink diamond in the world. The stone is estimated to weigh somewhere between 175 and 195 carats, and it is a light pink color. Its exact weight isn't known because its been mounted in its brooch setting for over 130 years. This stone is one of the most celebrated diamonds in the Iranian Crown Jewels and it is also one of the oldest stones known to man.

Steinmetz Pink

The Steinmetz Pink Diamond is classified as a vivid pink and is 59.60 carats in weight. This diamond was discovered in South Africa and is the largest Fancy Vivid Pink diamond in the world. This fantastic diamond was first shown to the public in 2003 in Monaco. A team of eight jewelers took 20 months to create this Internally Flawless diamond. They created over 50 models before cutting on the real diamond began.

With the new techniques in creating laboratory diamonds it will only be a matter of time before quality pink diamonds are available to the general public at an affordable price.
