The Argyle Diamond Mine is located in a remote corner of North West Australia and it produces over 90 percent of the world supply of pink diamonds and yet less that 1/10 of 1 percent is classified as Pink in color.



The pink diamonds comes in shades ranging from a pastel rose, such as the Pink Orchid to intense purple-reds of the Moussaieff Red, and the price is determined by the intensity of the color. Pink diamonds have sold for up to $1,000,000 a carat. Unlike the Type I diamonds that derived their color from impurities imbedded in the diamond, Pink diamonds are considered a Type II and get their color from a process known as Plastic Deformation.



Type II diamonds have very few if any nitrogen impurities in them. They get their coloration due to structural anomalies caused by Plastic Deformation during the crystal growth. The intense pressure changes the lattice structure of diamonds and has led to the formation of Pink, Red, and Brown colored diamonds.



Only 1 out of the top 66 largest diamonds in the world is pink. When Ben Affleck gave Jennifer Lopez a pink diamond solitaire engagement ring, traffic to web sites that had pink diamonds increased from 300 to 400 percent. Although not normally large in size they have become very popular and over the years many have become world famous.

Darya-I-Nur diamond is believed to be the largest pink diamond in the world. The stone is estimated to weigh somewhere between 175 and 195 carats, and it is a light pink color. This stone is one of the most celebrated diamonds in the Iranian Crown Jewels and it is also one of the oldest stones known to man.

The Steinmetz Pink Diamond is classified as a vivid pink and is 59.60 carats in weight. This diamond was discovered in South Africa and is the largest Fancy Vivid Pink diamond in the world. Emeralds Wipe Off Or Smooth And Polished
Emeralds always have a balance between clarity and returned light, the sparkle that is. You do want a stone with at least a decent amount of returned light. What I mean by this is light that goes into the top of the stone and is reflected back out to the eye. Otherwise, the stone looks rather dead and even the color is not as apparent.



Some light coming back to the eye is needed to bring that color to life. There is a trade off often between color and brilliance, it seems, unless the stone is completely top gem quality and has both color and clarity at the same time, accompanied by well proportioned cutting of the gem.



"Dull Look On The Surface". Why would one stone look like it needs to be "wiped off" and another look smooth and well polished? Generally, this is because the well polished stone is just that, a piece of emerald able to take a good polish and then polished well by the cutter.



The duller or more waxy looking stone is either less well polished in the first place or the emerald material simply cannot take a better polish. Why not a better polish? Defects in the stone are a general reason. Often, well, almost always, emeralds are treated to some extent and that is generally with oils which tend to hide inclusions.



The inclusions which reach the surface of the stone are pretty well hidden by oils but this can also prevent a perfect polish. Unfortunately, over zealous cleaning of an oil treated stone may remove the oil and suddenly you see cracks and furrows not visible before. That is the stone as it was before being subjected to oiling! You might want to ask the jeweler about oiling on the cushion stone you have seen. Do not be surprised to hear the answer is "most likely" or "yes".



Since most emeralds are treated in this or similar manner (some really nasty ones are given a plastic sort of filler!), do not be dismayed. Only be certain the jeweler can stand behind the stone, especially considering the price of the one you like for your setting.



"Jardin". The inclusions in emeralds are called a "garden" or "jardin". This refers to the almost garden look to the flaws and swirls inside the stone. This is to be expected in most emeralds of any size, with more or less garden. Inclusions are expected. What to watch for are definite internal fractures, little breaks which appear healed with in the stone.



Such internal flaws near the areas where the setting applies pressure, as with prongs, may be dangerous in the setting process. Ask to see the stone under a scope and ask if any of the inclusions will lead to stone setting problems. At this point, all risk is in the hands of the jeweler doing the work but ask to be sure!



"Memo Goods". A reputable jeweler with connections to the colored stone world can receive what is called "memo good" from stone vendors. The vendor will send a small selection of gems for the customer to view. You might be responsible for the postage but should not be considering the purchase prices overall. The jeweler can check regular stone vendors they work with or go on the net to specialized jewelry web sites where stones are requested and sold everyday. The jeweler might be able to find a cushion cut for the setting you prefer and find a better stone in the process.



If you have a little time, this might very well be worth requesting. Do not feel locked into what the jeweler has in stock. Other stones are out there and should be available to an established jeweler. The cushion you like might be just fine, of course I have not see it. By all means, if you have any doubts about the gem, look further. You do not want to spend the money and always have a little feeling that you should have gotten a better emerald.



That is why I tell everyone that if you look for one or more settings that you like you could always get the one that you want for the inter net, jewelry store close to home, or a jewelry store that is out of state. Don't take what you get see what they get and then make ulp your mind on what you want.

Tips for Buying Emerald-Cut Diamonds
An Emerald Cut diamond is a diamond that has been cut to a rectangular or square step cut with diagonally cut corners. It usually has 2 to 4 rows of parallel facets to the center of the stone. A very popular style of cut used for Emeralds hence the name. What makes this cut unique is the large flat face (table) when viewed from the top.



This flat face highlights the clarity of the diamond so only high quality diamonds are cut to this shape. The lack of impurities and inclusion in the stone will increase the price so emerald cut diamonds are usually more expensive than other cuts with the same caret weight.



The classic emerald-cut shape has a length to width ratio of 1.30 to 1.40. It is interesting to note that studies done back in the mid 1970s showed that the majority of successful business also had logos with the same length to width ratio. Other length to width ratios is available and if they are pleasing to the eye is determined only by individual tastes. 1.25, 1.50, and 1.75 are very common and if you prefer a more square shape then take a look at the Asscher cut. It also has a flat face to highlight the clarity of the diamond but has a length to width ratio of about 1.0 to 1.05.



When purchasing an emerald cut stone of SI clarity grade or lower, be sure to review the clarity plot on the diamond certificate. A diamond is said to be Slightly Included (S.I.1 to S.I.2) when it presents defects that are easy to locate under 10x magnification.

The Beau Sancy



Also called The Little Sancy is a rounded pear shaped and weights about 34 carats and has been confused with its counter part called The Sancy which is 54 carats. This diamond was bought by Prince Frederick Henry of Orange the grandfather of King Fredrick I of Prussia, who died in the year 1647. The Beau Sancy is now in the possession of the head of the house of Hohenzollern, Prince Louis-Ferdinand of Prussia, grandson of William II, the last Emperor of Germany



The Beluga



The Beluga diamond weighs over 103 carats and is the largest standard oval brilliant cut diamond in the world. This diamond was featured in an article about Blood Diamonds in the March 2002 issue of National geographic magazine.



The Black Orlov



The Blace Orlov is said to have derived its name from the Russian Princess Nadia Vyegin-Orlov who owned it during the mid 1800s. It is a cushion cut stone weighing 76.50 carats and is a very dark gun metal color. It has also been rumored to have been cut from a 195 carat stone that belonged to a shrine near Pondicherry, India in the 1900s. There is no evidence of a Russian princess by that name nor has India ever produced any large black diamonds of note. In 1969, the stone was sold for $300,000.



The Blue Empress



The Blue Empress is a rare blue pear shaped diamond that weights about 14 carats and is part of a necklace valued at around $16,000,000. The necklace is made from 18K white gold with smaller white diamonds surrounding the blue empress.



The Blue Heart



This diamond weights 30.82 carats and is of a rare deep blue color. In 1910 Cartier purchased the diamond and sold it to an Argentinean woman named Mrs. Unzue. Van Cleef & Arpels bought the stone in 1953 for an estimated $300,000. The Blue Empress is on exhibit in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. Along with the Hope diamond and the Heart of Eternity, it is one of the world most famous blue diamonds.

Blue diamonds are among the rarest of colored diamond and they obtain their color from the small amounts of boron that was trapped during its crystallization process. The Blue Magic is pear shaped and weights 12.02 carats. It is estimated to be work between $5,000,000 and $6,000,000.

Guidelines for Commissioning A Piece of Jewellery There's a special occasion in the offing, a birthday, an anniversary, a new baby, an engagement, First Communion, Valentines Day, Christmas the list is almost endless! You think that it would be lovely to give a really special personal gift, something totally unique but that would be really expensive wouldn't it? Well, probably not as expensive as you think. Using silver or semi precious beads a realistic budget could start as low as £30, for example a simple birthstone bracelet, a pair of anniversary earrings or a birthstone ring would all be in that sort of region. For heavier silver items that need hallmarking (large pendants, upper arm bracelets, heavy necklaces) you may be looking at nearer the £100 mark but certainly something made just for you or a loved one won't break the bank. Where do I start? Firstly do some internet searches for jewellery designers working in your locality or country (these days thanks to the internet many design commissions can be done completely by e-mail). Have a look at their designs â€" do you like their work? See what they say about commissions, how do they normally do their design work? Check out the prices for items on their website or in their gallery. Most designers will charge a little extra on top of their normal prices because of the extra work involved in making a commission, as a rough guide an extra 20-30% is reasonable because of the one to one, bespoke service you are getting. Draw up a list of two or three designers whose work you like Contact them and give them a rough idea of the sort of item/occasion you want to have your special jewellery made for. Designers are used to both people who know exactly what they want and those who only have a very vague idea, so don't worry if you need guidance. Most designers love talking to clients and helping them create something really special. At this point you will probably have a gut feeling as to the designer you would most like to use and you can ask them for a "ball park" figure for the type of design you want. You will also need to give the designer some idea about time frame for delivery. We can all work fast if we have to (last week I took a pair of anniversary earrings from design to delivery between Friday and Tuesday of the next week and that included ordering some special stock in!) but it's better for all concerned to have a bit more time. Please also keep in mind that most jewellery designers busiest period is just before Christmas and they will probably have multiple custom orders to juggle, so give them a minimum of six weeks notice at this time of year. Sometimes it will just not be possible to make something in the time frame given and the designer will tell you if that is the case. Get a design and proper quote Most designers will have several ideas to show you and will be able to roughly cost the work for you at this stage. Once you have decided on your final design you will be given a proper costing. Don't forget to add in P&P to that if you aren't collecting it (commissioned jewellery will need to be sent Special Delivery roughly £5 in the UK). Designers will vary as to whether they charge a deposit at this stage or not. In the case of very expensive items that they need to buy in like diamonds/gold they will probably be more likely to ask for a big deposit. I personally tend not to ask for a deposit because I want the person to be happy with what I have made for them before they pay anything, I also tend to think if it is a good piece of jewellery (which it hopefully is!) it would be saleable to someone else anyway. The only occasion where I might ask for a deposit is if the item I am being asked for is the sort of thing that I wouldn't normally sell! (Use your own imagination here!). Sit back and wait The designer should keep you informed about how the creative process is progressing, this includes things like unforeseen supply problems etc that might affect the expected finishing date. Sometimes, for example, items sent for hallmarking can take longer than expected (a couple of weeks is not unknown!). Once your item is finished they will either make and appointment to show you the final item or e-mail you a photograph of it. When you are happy with the item the designer will expect full payment before delivery. One final thing! Do let the designer know if you have any problems with your item. If you are happy with it and get lots of compliments let them know that too! When you make something you do get an emotional attachment to it and it's good to know it's loved and admired!

Differences Between Freshwater and Saltwater Pearls
Pearls can be purchased in both freshwater and saltwater form, and the differences between the two make them both unique. Freshwater pearls are formed in freshwater mussels found in bodies of fresh water. By contrast, as one might expect, saltwater pearls are formed in saltwater mussels found in bodies of saltwater.

At one time, saltwater pearls were the only real option on the market, as the number of freshwater pearls being cultivated with desired aesthetic properties were few and far between. Today, freshwater pearls are produced with the same proportionality and size as saltwater pearls, and most often in China.

The processing techniques used in the cultivation of freshwater pearls have been perfected to the point that quality pearls can be realized in a period of between three to six years. Freshwater pearls are cultivated through the use of finite irritants, which are normally smaller than the irritants used in saltwater cultivation. This results in a pearl with a thicker nacre and increased luster. At this time, Chinese pearl cultivators are able to produce upwards of twenty pearls in a single oyster. Many saltwater cultivators produce pearls faster by using irritants that are exceptionally large. This results in increased production but a substantially lower number of nacre layers. Some saltwater pearl farms, however, use irritants slightly larger than those used to aid in the making of freshwater pearls for better quality and higher market value.

Saltwater pearls are naturally less diverse in color than their freshwater counterparts. Usually available in a select few hues, many pearl wholesalers now dye the pearls after they are cultivated for increased coloration. Freshwater pearls offer more luminescence than saltwater pearls. The recent discovery that adding various metals to the water in which freshwater pearls are cultivated can produce wider ranges of colors has brought a renewed interest from pearl buyers worldwide.

Properly cultivated pearls of the highest quality in both the freshwater and saltwater varieties will hold their value provided they are well cared for. With the prices of both coming ever closer for the same size and shape of pearl, today’s consumers can simply choose which they find more aesthetically appealing.
