The company began making affordable clocks for working class Americans during the 1850's and continued its ventures in time keeping to pocket watches and eventually to wrist watches. Before the name Timex, there existed Waterbury Clocks, which was based out of Naugatuck Valley, Connecticut. By the 1880's Waterbury Watch, a sister company of Waterbury Clocks began producing affordable priced pocket watches assembled by a predominately female workforce. These pocket watches sold incredibly well and paved the way for the "Yankee" pocket watch. The Yankee cost just one dollar at the time and was carried by everybody from Mark Twain to the local grocer. 1917 was the year the first Waterbury wrist watches were born. The U.S. Army had Waterbury retool the Yankee into convenient wrist watches.
