Classic Timex Watches

Timex watches are the classic American watch. The company began making affordable clocks for working class Americans during the 1850's and continued its ventures in time keeping to pocket watches and eventually to wrist watches.

Before the name Timex, there existed Waterbury Clocks, which was based out of Naugatuck Valley, Connecticut. By the 1880's Waterbury Watch, a sister company of Waterbury Clocks began producing affordable priced pocket watches assembled by a predominately female workforce. These pocket watches sold incredibly well and paved the way for the "Yankee" pocket watch. The Yankee cost just one dollar at the time and was carried by everybody from Mark Twain to the local grocer. 1917 was the year the first Waterbury wrist watches were born. The U.S. Army had Waterbury retool the Yankee into convenient wrist watches.

In 1950, the first timex watches were put into production. After the war, the newly named U.S. Time Company created inexpensive wrist watches that were as durable and reliable as any other mechanical wrist watch, called the Timex. Marketed through "live torture tests" on TV, Timex watches took off and never landed. By the end of the 1950's, Timex watches accounted for one of every three watches purchased in the United States. Timex watches continued to dominate the low priced watch market and began to market through a new idea that watches were an impulsive item. Their argument was based on the fact that for one expensive watch, you could buy several Timex watches to match every ensemble and occasion.
